The animals of the African Savanna are amazing and iconic and I had so much fun turning some of them into patchwork blocks! This 64” x 84” sampler quilt is made using conventional patchwork techniques. All pieces are square or rectangular except the rhino’s horn, which is made using a cutting guide and a shortcut piecing technique similar to Lisa the Unicorn’s horn or Norm and Nanette’s hats.
The blocks are made using a combination of fat quarters and fat eighths and the pattern includes a detailed fabric guide. You can use the guide to duplicate my fabrics exactly, or to plan a fantastic fabric combination of your own.
In addition to the sampler quilt, Spectacular Savanna includes complete instructions for turning each of the blocks into a variety of bonus projects. Zebra, Giraffe, Rhino, and Hippo blocks are 20” square. Lion, Wildebeest, and Leaf blocks are 24” square. Elephant and Gazelle blocks are 30” square. 20” and 24” blocks can be turned into pillows and all block sizes can be tiled to make quilts in multiple sizes.
