Making a Patchwork quilt - Lap Quilt Size 48”x32”
Imagine being able to create a patchwork quilt that can be loved by all your family for years to come!
This 8-week course will guide you through the skills needed to create a basic patchwork quilt, from beginning to end. The skills you will learn are the essential building blocks for all quilts and from here you will be able to go on to learn ever more intricate and difficult designs.
The quilt design will be made up of a large number of small squares. You will learn how to cut fabric correctly; piece together the patchwork ‘squares’; quilt the layers together and finally to bind the quilt at the end.
The finished quilt will be a small ‘lap sized’ quilt. The process is the same no matter what size quilt you wish to create. However, I feel that this is a good size to begin with it allows you to build solid skills whilst not being too overwhelming.
As for all our courses, our goal is for you to come away wanting to learn more and most importantly, feeling confident to go on and build on these skills for yourself, at home.
Patchwork is the art of cutting up numerous fabrics and re stitching them together to create something completely new. Quilting is the process of holding the layers of a quilt together, traditionally three. This can be a whole new art form in its own right. As you can imagine, once you have the basic knowledge and skills, the opportunities for creativity within patchwork and quilting are utterly endless.
Students will be expected to bring:
Basic Sewing Kit including scissors
5 long quarters of different colour or design of fabrics (100% cotton)
0.5m fabric for binding
1.5metre x 1.5metre of wadding and backing fabric
Quilter's safety pins.
-The thread and long quarters of fabric will need to be brought to the first session. -The wadding and backing fabric can be bought at a later stage during the duration of the course. -The Quilter's safety pins can also be purchased during the course.
Each session the students will be taken through the steps of how to make a quilt. By the end of the course, the students should feel confident with their skills, so that they could progress onto building more skills in patchwork.
Janome sewing machines are provided for use in this class.
